Moore MT

#97C is at the depot at Moore MT on February 19, 1979. Moore was on the North Montana Line. Note the train order signal still in place in 1979.

Falls Yard

Extra 558/552 west is at the Great Falls MT yard on January 21, 1979.

Falls Yard Two

SD10 #556 is at the west end of the Great Falls MT yard on January 29, 1980. The former "Falls Yard" is now just a memory.

Waltham MT

Train #800 leaves Waltham MT, m/p 175 on the North Montana Line, with caboose #991993 on February 25, 1980.

Great Falls One

Extra #552 west with #513 passes the Meatco line bridge west of Falls Yard, with caboose #991981 on February 9, 1980.

Simms MT

Extra 545/552 is westbound north of Simms MT, m/p 230.1 on the North Montana Line. It is crossing bridge #NM1180 on May 20, 1978.

North Montana Line

Train #800 has units 513/507/21C working the North Montana Line on February 5, 1980.

Waltham MT

Train #800 is westbound with units 513/507 at Waltham MT on February 5, 1980.

Geraldine MT

Extra 545 east with units 5051/522/513 are departing Geraldine MT, m/p 135.1 on the North Montana Line on February 10, 1980.

Taunton Substation

Train 201 is westbound passing the substation at Taunton WA on September 2, 1978. Electrification went dead on the Coast Division six years prior, but the wires are still up on this date.

Beverly Bridge

This westbound train is crossing the Columbia River at Beverly WA on September 2, 1978. On the west side the train will turn north and begin its climb to the top of the Saddle Mountains and Johnson Creek tunnel.

WCRC Othello

Washington Central #201 is working the former MILW track at Othello WA on April 9, 1987.

Othello

SD40-2 #22 is westbound at Othello WA on March 21, 1977. Note the raised ice-breaker on the locomotive. These were called pantographs by the railroad crews.

Warden Depot

The Warden WA depot's days are numbered on July 5, 1975. After it was no longer used it was moved away from the track to the only hill in town.

Heath MT

X553 east is switching the U.S. Gypsum plant at Heath MT on October 30, 1979. Prior to April 1977 this line ran east to Grassrange MT. From 1917 to mid-1972 it went from Winnett MT. BN continued this operation for five years after March 1980 when USG closed this operation.

Geraldine MT

This train is at Geraldine MT. 1940 vintage caboose #991891 is on the main line while the power switches the grain elevator which subsequently burned down in April 2001. It was rebuilt.

Denton MT

This shows the west end of the Denton MT class D depot, with ribside caboose #991891 on the rear of train Extra 556 east on February 10, 1980. This depot replaced the original class A type. The original depot was 108 feet by 24 feet, similar to Geraldine's depot, but 16 feet longer. It included a wood platform with a standard 18 foot high by 26 foot diameter wooden water tank. The tank was removed in 1954.

Hoosac MT

SD's #556/505/522/513 are eastbound with 41 loads and 12 empties totalling 4350 tons crossing bridge #NM-1026 over a county road by Hossac MT on February 10, 1980. This was typical power for North Montana line trains between Harlowton MT and Great Falls MT from c1973 to operations ended in 1980. This track was operated to Geraldine MT by BN from March 1980 to April 1983. It is still in use by the Central Montana Ry who took over in the Fall of 1983. This track is also part of the run of the dinner train from Lewistown MT.

Hoosac MT II

Ribside caboose #991891 at Hoosac MT. It was built in 1940. The train is Extra 556 east with 52 cars and is crossing the pile testle #NM-1026. It is February 10, 1980.

Danvers MT

Looking northwest towards the west switch of Danvers MT on the North Montana Line. Sage Creek viaduct is in the background. It is February 10, 1980.

Amherst MT

Train Extra 556 east is southbound to Lewistown MT. This view looks north-northeast towards the South Moccasin Mountains. The train in near Amherst MT. This track was part of our chartered train ride at out 2002 MilWest Annual Meet in Lewistown.

Baxter MT

The westbound "Winifred" job with SD-7 #522 plus 8 empty 40 foot boxcars and intermediate ribside caboose #991946, rounds the 2 degree curve approaching U.S. Highway 191 crossing near m/p 6 southeast of Baxter MT on February 12, 1980. This was the last time a westbound train carried revenue cars over this branch. The #522 returned with 4 loads from Winifred on that day. This was our MilWest calendar shot for 2002.

Lewistown MT Freight Office

The former Milwaukee freighthouse and office in Lewistown MT on October 30, 1979. It was located on 1st Avenue and 1/2 block east of Commercial St. It was built c1950 some 8 blocks south-southeast of the original one c1911. That building is now part of the Yogo Inn. This later building had the hip roof added by BN who has owned it since mid-1980. It was used by BNSF until early 2003 when they quit serving Lewistown..

Brroks MT

SD-7 Extra 552 east with eight empty cars and ribside caboose #991946. The train is on its way to Winifred MT on February 12, 1980. It is one and one-half miles north of Brooks MT. It is descending a 1.7% grade as it wound its way down into Bull Creek's coulee. This is believed to be the last eastbound revenue trip on this branch. This portion was constructed 69 years earlier, nearly reaching Hilger MT.

Taunton WA

Train #201 is westbound with SD40-2 #138 just east of the Taunton substation on September 2, 1978. R. Loder slide.

Beverly Helper

The E25 boxcab set is at beverly WA in June 1967. The E25 served as the Beverly helper on the Saddle Mountain grade westbound to Kittitas. The bridge across the Columbia river is at the foot of the mountain in the background of the photo. R. Loder slide.

Westbound Othello WA

This view is on the south end of Othello as the track made a sweeping turn to the west. Power today is the E25 boxcab set with an extra unit attached. The date is June 1970. R. Loder slide.
